A Vision of Hell

Horn of AfricaWith the horn of Africa experiencing the worst drought in 60 years, our partners in Kenya and the media coverage all tell us the same story – a tragedy of starvation, homelessness and helplessness. As Kenya struggles with the challenges of the drought, price hikes and food shortages, they now face another burden in the form of millions of refugees from their neighboring countries. The world’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab, located in Kenya is bursting at the seams hosting 370,000 refugees, far more than its maximum capacity of 90,000. Over 11 million people are starving and homeless with no relief in sight.

The sheer horror of this famine is unthinkable for many of us. Parents are forced to abandon their children to death or send them to the streets to beg, enduring risks of abuse and enslavement, because they simply cannot support them. Families walk for hundreds of miles in search of relief, going weeks without food – only to find their hopes unanswered at each turn. Malnourished mothers are forced to give birth to their newborns with no medical treatment and not enough nourishment to provide breast milk for their babies. Humans and animals are competing for what little water is available. These are not unique stories – this is happening to hundreds of thousands of African families every single day. We simply could not sit back and listen to the stories any longer.
